Here are some papers written in grad school. It can be pretty dry stuff, but there are a few worthwhile points. The class was taught by Dr. Lawrence Ferrara, now chariman of the music departmnet at NYU's School of Education. He had us base our analasys' on his own method which is detailed in his book "Philosophy and the Analasys of Music". Heady stuff, indeed!! There are papers on Study for Player Piano #1 by Conlon Nanacarrow, Structures Book 1A by Pierre Boulez, and the slow movement of Roger Sessions' Piano Sonata #3. Hope you find something of interest!!!
Also to be found here, what was essentially my Masters thesis. This paper explores Expressionism in 20th Century American Music, from Ives to Carter. When writing the paper, you were supposed to tie the theme of your paper up with your own compositional activities. I tried. It's long, but has some interesting points, for folks who like this sort of thing. Again, it's a little dry and academic, but that's what it was supposed to be. (I was listening to lots of Pearl Jam while wrinting this paper, in addition to the music discussed. Wonder if there's any sub-conscious influences to be found?).
